Knysna MTB Marathon Mountain Bike Race Review

by Average Guy

The Knysna MTB marathon is a bit like a Cape Epic reunion ride. The course follows much of the same roads as we experienced on day 1 of this years Epic. The conditions, however, somewhat mirrored last years Epic, with much of the course wet and muddy.

The rain started at bed time on Friday night and stopped about 5 minutes from the start of the race. The course was wet, but for the most part very pleasant. The route follows mostly dirt roads, and there are 2 sections of forest single track. I really feel with all the amazing riding in the area they can add some more technical stuff to take this from an awesome race, to really super awesome!

The climbing is relentless, and somehow despite my lack of training I managed to make it to the end in a fairly good time. I also had decided to leave the race rocket carbon hardtail in Pretoria, which left me to ride, Monster. This is the name I have given my full susser that is built up from spare parts, but sports, as the main feature the unbelievable Fox RP23 rear shock. The route left me with almost no opportunity to hit the “fun” switch which fully activates the suspension. This race is definitely one for the hard tail next year.

Top honors went to Kevin Evans, from Raleigh MTN an emotional win on home soil for the Plett boy.

All in all it was a great race, good organization and a very comfortable venue. Just add some more single track and they could really have a winner.
