internet and online bike shops, nothing beats a visit to the
LBS. Every LBS has its own unique character and characters
who work (live) in them. Your local mountain bike shop is the source
of all your mountain bike spares, information including latest
mountain bikes, bike selection and sizing, cycling clothing
and all the accessories you'll ever need. Its also great to find local MTB trails, people to ride with,
have coffee, a break
from work, a place to hang out, a meeting point, bike
maintenance and the best of all, a place to spend your hard
earned cash. South Africa has some great cycle retailers with
passionate people behind their counters. The rider owned
stores are the best because they know what they are selling
and often have first hand experience with the products that
they stock.
The mountain
bike parts and bikes stocked by the
bike shops are supplied via local agents, distributors or
importers. They represent their principles the major
mountain bike companies and suppliers from overseas and are
there to provide local knowledge and support for the
international brands. With the growth of mountain biking in
recent years we have seen a growing number of international
bike brands and products become widely available in South
Africa.
Online Shopping in South
Africa is a contentious issue especially when it involves
buying directly from US and European online bike shops,
thereby sidelining the LBS. But that's life and a result of
globalisation and made possible by the internet. Shopping
for bike parts online has its advantages and disadvantages,
it can save you quite a bit of money or cost you in the long
run. Getting mountain bike parts is usually quite cost
effective because there are no import duties and shipping
is often reasonable. However if you want to buy
mountain bikes it will be a bit more expensive due to import
duties on complete bikes.
