New Mountain Bikes 2008

New mountain bikes are released every year around mid year. The new model bikes are shown at the major cycling shows like Eurobike and Interbike. From the middle of the year you can expect to start seeing news stories on the new releases for the coming year. Bike shops run down their stocks over winter to clear out old stuff and get ready for the following years new models. So the best time to get a new mountain bike is towards the end of the year when the new model bikes arrive.

Ibis Tranny Carbon Fibre Hardtail

It’s a carbon fiber hardtail - It’s a geared bike - It’s a single speed - It’s a travel bike - It’s all of the above! That is exactly what you would expect from IBIS the innovative bike manufacturer, who is well known for the Ibis Mojo and more recently the Ibis Mojo SL. The Ibis Tranny (carbon fiber hardtail) has a removable, adjustable-length, chainstay. This means you can change it from a single speed to a geared bike to a travel bike in a matter of minutes. Take a close peek at the section behind the bottom bracket. There’s a little thing down there they call the ‘Slot Machine’. It’s not really a machine, but it does have a slot that makes it adjustable. That same box of magic, along with the curious little bolt up along the wishbone allows you to take the whole rear end off of the bike. Available Jan/Feb 2008 in South Africa from www.twowheelstrading.co.za.

New Trek Remedy

Trek unveiled its new Remedy for 2008 at the Interbike show. This is their all mountain trail bike. It looks a lot like the new specialized design with the curved down tube, quite an interesting design choice. Trek has also gone with the tapered head tube to reduce weight and improve strength. The new Remedy comes in 3 configurations, the top model Remedy 9 with XT / SRAM drivetrain and Avid Juicy brakes, the Remedy 8 with all XT components and the Remedy 7 with Deore and Avid components.

Giant mountain bikes for 2008 are lighter

Giant Bicycles successfully launched its multi-link Maestro suspension system just two model years ago and has rapidly expanded the design into a wide-ranging line of mountain bikes that cover the gamut from short-travel cross-country race machines all the way to full-on downhill and freeride rigs. For 2008, Giant has focused on shedding weight from its existing offerings and filling in a noticeable hole in its travel range.

In combination with new hydroformed aluminum tube shapes, the 2008 version(Trance) sheds a substantial 250g (0.55lb) yet, according to Giant, is actually 10.5% stiffer in torsion thanks to careful shaping of the head tube area.

Similar attention was paid to the longer-travel Reign. In this case, however, the changes are even more dramatic: Giant dropped 738g (1.6lb) from the 153mm (6")-travel frame and increased torsional rigidity by 23%.

Specialized 2008 Preview

While Specialized is putting the finishing touches on new bikes and equipment for 2008, invited members of the press were given a glimpse of what's in store. Check out info and links on the all-new Stumpjumper FSR, Tarmac SL2, the incredibly light S-Works 2D helmet, and more!

The Stumpjumper FSR has been re-looked, since the Stumpjumper 2006, given more carbon and shed some weight.

The new Roval MTB wheels are designed with high performance in mind for racing, cross-country, and all-mountain riding. Hand-built from the highest quality parts, the rims, hubs and spokes put them at the top of the market for mountain wheels.

Rockshox testing new SID replacement?

The most striking features are the larger stanchion tubes, presumably 32mm, and the bulge on the lower legs, which look to be adapted from the Lyric and Totem trail and freeride forks. On those forks, the added material surrounds the main bushing and prevents stretching in the critical bushing area.
