Absa Cape Epic 2009 - done and dusted
The Cape Epic 2009 kicked off with a brutal day despite not starting in the traditional Knysna location. The race with its all new format with shorter stages and fewer days of more technical riding was by all accounts another success. The racing upfront was hard and exciting and the stories from the backmarkers long and telling. Never easy it was as always epic and the demand for one of the most challenging races around remains a high as ever. New Trek Remedy
Bike design is where it is at these days.Trek has followed some of the design cues from Specialized with their new all-mountain bike the Remedy. Released at Interbike 2008 the Trek Remedy looks good. Check out Remedy pics, specs and reviews.

Him and Minki (Specialized Stumpjumper) have been riding some USA MTB trails at Bootleg Canyon Nevada and Noble Canyon Southern California. Absa Cape Epic 2009 - Route Changes

The Cape Epic 2009 dropped a little bombshell on the mountain biking community with their announcement of a changed start venue. No more Knysna pilgrimage and returning home via the mountains. The Absa Cape Epic 2008 has passed and left many battered and bruised bodies and egos after the toughest event ever. Searing heat, long distances and tough technical sections took their toll. There were no easy days and no rest days, it was epic - the way it should be. As expected it got bigger and better, most notably the media coverage every where you looked, TV, newspapers, magazines, youtube, blogs and websites. Freedom Challenge

Maarten wins the Freedom challenge, followed by Tim and in joint third Hannele and Lee. Single speed Andre rolled in in 21 days, 5 days before the cut off. The Freedom Challenge is an unassisted mountain bike race over 2300km from Pietermarizburg to Cape Town. This event is the most extreme mountain bike race in Africa and spans a truly remote part of South Africa. Fifteen riders set off on 17 June, headed for Paarl by cutoff on 13 July. Norman Goakes Rehabilitation Fund
On May 12th 2007, Norman Goakes started his day the same way he has for the past few years - on his bike. He had been training hard for the Ceres Mountain Bike Challenge. Only 2.5 kms into the race, a rider fell in front of Norman and unable to stop, he fell over the rider. Then, the whole pack fell on him. The pack picked themselves up one by one, a few scratches and bruises here and there, but Norman didn't get up. Read more ....

Olympic dreams
Burry Stander is busy riding for the GT pro team in the US. Together with JP Pearton and Kevin Evans they are picking up UCI points where ever they can. Raleigh Riding High 2007 Mazda Series
It’s only three races old, but the 2007 Mazda Marathon MTB Series is already seeing a dominance by the Raleigh MTN Energade team. With victory at Barberton and second places at Harrismith and Graskop, Kevin Evans currently leads the Series with teammates Mannie Heymans and Melt Swanepoel filling second and third places respectively. Cape Epic Route 2007 Announced
Christoph Sauser is back in SA, again! Or is it just that he never left, it is no secret that he loves SA and comes out to train in the Stellenbosch area regularly. But this time however he is up in GP land to attend the black tie route opening for the Cape Epic 2007. And then also to do a morning ride demo at the Logwood MTB park. The freedom trail covers 2200km from Pietermaritxburg to Paarl in the Cape.

Cape Epic Lottery
The lottery has been run and the first round of invitations are out for the Cape Epic 2007. Its D-day for lottery ticket holders, its time to sign on the dotted line and show the money! MtbOnline paid the Cape Epic dudes and ladies a visit earlier this week to see what goes on behind the scenes at the long street offices in Cape Town. We also popped out for a sidewalk lunch and cup of coffee. The epic crew were all talking about and preparing for the trial ride. The 2007 route will be announced later this year. The photo CDs were also  just being packed and posted off so if you had some coming you should have them by now. Check our pick of the web links for Cape Epic websites.

The lottery has been run and the first round of invitations are out for the Cape Epic 2007. Depending on your point of view the lucky made it and the not so lucky missed out. It is clearly an event that everyone wants to get into, judging by the disappointed ones. The waiting list is full, so now it is sit and wait until 20 August when lottery entries need to be taken up. But all is not lost for those who missed out, closer to the time there will be a few desperate entrants who need to get out and make their entries available. Martin Dreyer
Martin Dreyer of South Africa has won the the Land Rover G4 Challenge in South America. Mountain biking was one of the major disciplines of the event.
