Rocky Mountain Bikes in SA

ROCKY MOUNTAIN TO TAKE SA BY STORM

Rocky Mountain, Canada’s definitive hand-built mountain biking brand, is now available in South Africa. This is great news for all serious mountain bikers, especially for competitive riders staking their claim at the top end of the XC and Endurance competition scene, as the brand comes with an unrivalled racing pedigree.

The Rocky Mountain philosophy encapsulates much more than just competitive racing though. Their history timelines back to 1981, when three of Vancouver’s leading bike shops joined forces and named their brain child brand for British Columbia’s primary mountain range.

The next decade saw a number of Rocky Mountain innovations, including the Wheeltec process of hand-building wheels and the use of Easton aluminium tubing in bicycle manufacture. The launch of the ‘Edge’ heralded a new era in MTB, and introduced mountain bikers to the world’s first commercial full-suspension bike. The time had come for Rocky Mountain athletes to take centre stage too, and athletes like Alison Sydor and Regina Stiefl dominated the World Cup.

The bike that changed mountain biking as we know it was the ‘Pipeline’, a model that was to lay the foundation for the free-riding revolution. On-the-fly travel adjustment meant you could morph from XC to Downhill without leaving the saddle, and this new riding style gripped the imagination of riders from around the world.

Three years later, the birth of the ‘Slayer’ set a new benchmark as the bike that defined the ‘All Mountain’ category, and it was no surprise when it topped Mountain Biking Magazine’s “Bike of the Year” poll. Podium spots were now coming thick and fast for Rocky Mountain athletes, with consistent wins in Red Bull Rampage, the TransAlp Challenge, the TransRockies Challenge, the Cape Epic MTB Challenge and the 24hr Solo World Champs.

In 2006, Rocky Mountain celebrated a quarter century of hand-built quality by launching their family of invincible bikes on South African soil. Globacycles, with their warehousing and head offices conveniently situated in George, was chosen as the sole SA distributor. This dynamic company will work closely with their extensive dealer network in establishing this exciting brand name nationally.

Globacycles is headed up by Jacobus Murray (Finance), Pan van Tonder (Operations) and Wikus de Swardt (Marketing). Between them, these individuals have a solid understanding of the local mountain biking market and, together with regional dealers around the country; they are committed to building on Rocky Mountain’s worldwide success.

Dealers keen to join our ‘Love the Ride!’ team are welcome to forward their details to Wikus de Swardt on email wikus@globacycles.com. Once we have established whether applicants fit the criteria as prescribed by Rocky Mountain International, we will set up the necessary meetings with successful applicants.
